About Machine Gun in the Clown's Hand
The inspiration for this show, while readily apparent, is far
more than the headlines of recent history. This show was curated
as a pure labor of love from people accustomed to being called
everything from "communists" to "Al Qaida sympathizers".
Taking its name from a Jello Biafra spoken word album, Machine
Gun in the Clown's Hand has grown from an idea, to an art tour,
and an art movement, uniting the artistic communities of cities
as diverse as San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
The
art of MGITCH varies dramatically, while keeping a recurrent
theme of outrage and brave defiance. Political art, in general,
has the ability to address current issues while capturing an
image of history; the art contained in this show is a piece
of history, reminding viewers not only of where we are now,
but where we have the potential to go. We hope as an activist
and an artist that we will not continue to regress further into
the ideologies of a select few whose interests are opposed to
social justice, democracy, and humanity. We believe that change
is possible.
